You can easily add text or captions to most projects, and we have many fonts and colors to choose from. You have two options to add text. They each depend on your page layout:
If your page does not contain a text box
- Open the Text menu on the left (see example).
- Click the Add Text icon at the bottom of the menu.
- A text box with a blue border will open in the middle of the page (see below). Type in your text first, as it's easier to do before moving the text box or making other changes.
Note: You can include most special characters (e.g. ñ, ® , ½, µ, etc.) by copying them from the web or a word processing program and pasting them into the text box. You cannot type them into the box directly. - Next, you can change the font, the color or text alignment in the Text menu. Changes apply to all text in the box. Doing so will turn the border on your text box from blue (insert mode) to white (move mode), as shown below.
- In move mode, you can
- delete the box
- drag the bottom "handle" left or right to rotate the text box
- drag and drop the text box to another place on the page, or
- drag one of the text box corners or midpoints outward to increase the text box size and allow for more space to type or larger fonts.
If your page already contains a text box
- For page layouts that already include a text area, including spine text on books, click the Add Text area to select the text box.The border of the box will turn to white dashed lines with circles at the corners and diamonds at the midpoints of each side (see below).
Note: The front of many cards have sample text for name, address, etc. instead of the Add Text message, but they work the same way. Just click one to edit the text. - Click within the box and when the border turns blue (see below), type away!
As above, you can add special characters by copying them from the web or a word processing file and pasting them into the text box. - Next, you can change the font, the color or text alignment in the menu. Changes apply to all text in the box.
- For most text boxes, except spine text on books and text areas on the front of many card designs, you can enter move mode by clicking the edge of the box to:
- delete the box,
- drag and drop the text box to another place on the page, or
- drag one of the text box corners or midpoints outward to increase the text box size or shape to allow for more space to type or larger fonts.
Tips
- Avoid putting dark text on a dark photo or background, or light text on a light photo or background, because you won't be able to see your text!.
- The maximum font size you can choose depends on the text box height and width. If you want a larger font, first increase the text box size by dragging one of the corners outward. Then, choose a larger font size in the menu (see example on right).
- If you need more space for text, enlarge the text box as shown and described above.
- If you drag a text box across the page, you will see pink lines appear when the box is aligned with photos, embellishments or other text boxes. For example, near the corner of a page you can see both the horizonal and verticle alignment guides (see below).
